Bobbili sarees are handwoven in villages near Bobbili in Andhra Pradesh and are prized for their fine-count cotton construction. Once favoured by the Bobbili zamindars, these sarees are woven using exceptionally fine cotton yarns that lend them a soft, second-skin feel.
Traditionally crafted in fine 100-count cotton, Bobbili sarees are woven in checks, stripes, solids, and subtle colour-blocked patterns woven directly into the fabric. Their vibrant and subtle colour palette give out a clean appearance, combined with a lightweight texture and a drape that gently traces the body while remaining well-structured, creates a graceful refinement that is difficult to achieve in most cotton sarees.
Today, this specialised fine-count weaving tradition survives through a small community of artisans, with only around 50 weavers continuing the craft. Bobbili sarees strike a rare balance between practicality and class, light enough for everyday wear, yet elegant enough to leave a lasting impression.
