Ikat from Telangana is one of India’s most remarkable textile traditions, renowned for its intricate patterns and the extraordinary precision required to create them. Characterised by bold geometric forms, striking colour combinations, and distinctive blurred-edge motifs, Ikat is unlike most woven textiles and remains one of the most technically demanding forms of handloom craftsmanship.

Ikat is created through a complex resist-dyeing technique in which the design is planned and dyed onto the yarn before weaving even begins. Sections of the yarn are carefully tied, dyed, untied, and re-tied and dyed multiple times to achieve the desired pattern and colour sequence. In double Ikat, both the warp and weft are dyed and aligned with remarkable precision, requiring immense skill and accuracy at every stage of the process.

Whether woven in cotton or silk, the process, skill, and precision required remain exactly the same. Yet, while silk Ikats often receive greater attention, fine cotton Ikats remain among the most underrated expressions of the craft, offering the same extraordinary workmanship in a lighter and more breathable form suited to everyday wear.
